General Guidelines for Massage Therapy

MASSAGE AMBIANCE

The massage environment should be airy, spacious, hygienic, and welcoming. It needs to give an impression of order, calmness, and efficiency. Temperatures should be kept around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Soft, suffused lighting is advisable, and direct rays should never be on the face. A musical background is favored. Clients are encouraged to ask as many questions as they want before treatments. This can save massage therapists the hassle of being asked questions by a client during treatment.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET A MASSAGE?

There is no hard and fast rule on this. Clients can receive massages as often or as infrequently as they like.

SHOULD YOU EAT BEFORE A MASSAGE?

It is best not to eat immediately preceding or proceeding with a massage. Refined sugars, high fats, caffeine, and alcohol must be avoided for one hour before and after the massage. These can have a stronger effect on the clients than normal. Because bodywork introduces clean, oxygenated, and nourished fluids into the tissues and stimulates the body to purge toxins, it is important to flush them out by drinking plenty of water.

SHOULD YOU BE NUDE FOR A MASSAGE?

The best way to receive a massage is unclothed. However, Indian spas never require their clients to be naked if it makes them uncomfortable. Our spa therapists are trained in the “art of draping.” This makes spa clients less self-conscious as they are covered with a towel or sheet at all times, and only the part being massaged is exposed.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO BEFORE A MASSAGE?

We encourage our clients to wear loose, comfortable clothing and to remove jewelry. To enhance the relaxation process, schedule your spa appointment at that time of day when you have a few hours to relax.
